Superintendent Update, June 21

Hello students, staff and parents!

I hope you are healthy and enjoying the summer.  In two months it will be time to begin a new school year.  If we have learned anything these past few months, during the pandemic, it is to be flexible and patient.  I want to give a hearty congratulations to all of our students and staff for adjusting your spring and summer plans in order to keep everyone healthy and safe.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

As we look toward the fall, I want to share with you some of the work we will be doing the next six weeks.  Our goal will be to produce a flexible plan for restarting school in August that acknowledges the current pandemic environment.  The plan will be framed around five topics: 1) health & safety; 2) teaching & learning; 3) social & emotional health; 4) operations & logistics; and 5) activities.  Stakeholder teams will discuss and review critical questions relating to these topics.  Their ideas and solutions will be the basis of our school restart plan.

Our first step will occur next week as the District intends to survey students, staff and parents about their experiences with distance learning last spring.  The survey will be distributed through student and parent email accounts, as well as our web site and Facebook pages.  We will also be organizing our stakeholder teams.  If you would like to volunteer please contact my office or a building principal.  We would appreciate your input.

It is our intent to communicate with you throughout the summer and keep you posted about our school restart plans. Once again, I think the patience and flexibility we have learned from this pandemic will serve us well as we plan together as a community to restart our schools.

Happy Summer!
Mark Knapp

Tech Dept Busy During Closure

The Technology Department typically works in the background, supporting the teaching and learning of staff and students. During this COVID-19 school closure, however, we have been very busy and very visible. Our initial response focused on getting school chromebooks checked out to any student that needed one, in order to complete their digital assignments. Through a chromebook survey, we determined who needed to borrow one and then scheduled times for pickup.

After meeting that initial need, we looked outward to see how we could contribute to supporting efforts. We have been using our 3-D printers to print PPE masks. We reached out to the Robert C. Byrd Institute, affiliated with Marshall University in Huntington. They have an approved design for a reusable N95 mask, which they shared with us. N95 masks cover the wearer’s nose and mouth to protect against potentially harmful airborne particles by filtering at least 95 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns in size.

The High School MIT class has been working remotely with Mr. Tom Vallance, Technology Coordinator, to produce a remote news video to share the impact COVID has had on school operations and the community as a whole. Be watching for this video to be posted on the website soon.

THANK YOU, Mr. Vallance for continuing to reach out to and work with students and to help the District be part of the solution. #THEBURGWAY

State Board of Education Recognizes WHS
Wheelersburg High School has been recognized by the State Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education as a recipient of the 2019 Momentum Award.  The Momentum Award recognizes schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year. Schools must earn straight A’s on all Value-Added measures on the report card. The school or district must have at least two Value-Added subgroups of students, which includes gifted, lowest 20% in achievement, and students with disabilities.
Wheelersburg High School Principal Chris Porter stated, “There are a total of 48 districts and 173 schools recognized this year.  This is another example of the hard work and attention to detail that our teachers, students and staff are putting in on a daily basis.  It is also confirmation that our teachers and staff are focusing on the right improvement practices.  Thank you to everyone for helping make this award a reality for our school.  Congratulations!”
