WES Security Incident Summary

Dear Parent,

Yesterday, May 15, Wheelersburg Elementary School officials activated the District’s safety procedures because of a perceived threat.

I would like to briefly summarize the incident. A parent entered the office and was denied permission to travel to their child’s classroom. The parent was subsequently given permission to travel to a different part of the building. Upon completing their approved visit the parent deviated from returning to the office and proceeded towards their child’s classroom. At this point the parent crossed over from an approved visitor to an intruder status.

In an abundance of caution, an alert was communicated to the elementary school placing it in lockdown status. The students and staff reacted appropriately and quickly. However, the alert was not communicated clearly to Wheelersburg Middle School or Wheelersburg High School. This resulted in confusion for students and staff members. The intruding parent was confronted and the intrusion was defused quickly. The entire incident ended before all of our safety procedures were fully implemented. The intruding parent left the building without any further incident.

The Administrative Team has met to review and analyze this incident. We have reviewed our procedures and in order to enhance our students’ and staffs’ safety we are making some adjustments.

Finally, I want to apologize for any worry this incident may have caused you or your child. As I stated earlier we reacted to a perceived threat with an abundance of caution. I apologize if somehow our actions fell short of your expectations.

Mark Knapp, Superintendent
