Welcome to 5th Grade Reading!
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one."

My name is Carrie Gullett and I teach 5th grade English Language Arts. This is my 4th year in this position and my seventh year teaching ELA at WMS. I received my Bachelor's degree in Middle Childhood Education from Shawnee State University in 2009. I am extremely excited and proud to be teaching 5th grade!

In my classroom, we will focus on close reading of both literary and informational text. Students will learn to utilize a vast array of reading skills to aide them in recalling relevant and important information from what they read. We will also focus on writing in response to reading and developing skills to answer short answer and extended response questions thoroughly and accurately.

Course Information
1st period students are required to meet their individualized AR goals by March 21st. Check your child's AR chart to see their goal which has been determined using their STAR test results and individual learning styles. AR will be a graded assignment.
2nd-5th period students are required to read and pass the AR tests over (at least) three chapter books by March 21st. Check your child's AR chart to monitor their progress. AR will be a graded assignment. Students who fill up their charts will receive bonus points!
*All students have weekly informational articles which they must read and respond to by Friday of each week. This assignment, aside from AR, will most likely be your child's only homework assignment each week for reading class. We work hard in class and get the job done- after-school time is for studying, time with family, and being a kid! :)
